Price comparison at a glance
| Resolution | Fast | Standard | Savings with Fast |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p | $0.10/s | $0.40/s | 75% |
| 1080p | $0.12/s | $0.40/s | 70% |
| 4K | $0.30/s | $0.60/s | 50% |
At 1080p, Fast is about 3.3× cheaper than Standard. An 8-second Fast 1080p clip costs about $0.96; Standard costs about $3.20. Over a week of prompt experiments, that gap compounds quickly.
When to use Fast
Use Fast for storyboarding, prompt tuning, camera-motion tests, and any take you expect to throw away. Most creative waste happens before you know the final look — paying Standard rates for those discarded generations is the #1 budget killer. Fast still delivers Veo 3.1 quality at a lower price; it is not a different product family.
When to use Standard
Switch to Standard for client-facing finals, hero shots, and anything that ships at maximum fidelity. Many teams keep Standard for the last 10–20% of generations after locking composition on Fast. If you need 4K, budget carefully: Standard 4K is $0.60/s ($4.80 for 8 seconds), while Fast 4K is $0.30/s ($2.40 for 8 seconds).
Where Lite fits
Lite undercuts both: $0.05/s at 720p and $0.08/s at 1080p, but no 4K. It is ideal for high-volume drafts when resolution can stay at 1080p or below. An 8-second Lite 1080p clip is about $0.64 — roughly one-fifth of Standard.
Retries matter more than the tier label. Three Fast takes still cost less than one Standard take at 1080p ($2.88 vs $3.20), so iteration on Fast plus a single Standard final often beats "Standard for everything."
